Blackjack may seem purely American, but it actually comes from “La Veintiuna”, a game of Spanish origin. The first written reference to this game is contained in the picaresque work Rinconete y Cortadillo by Miguel de Cervantes.
Back in the 1600s, the text describes the object of the game: score twenty-one points without going over. With which it is deduced that it was already played in Castile at the beginning of the 17th century.
The aim is to reach a score of 21 or get as close as possible to it without exceeding that limit.
Blackjack consists of obtaining 21 points with the first two cards (an Ace combined with a 10 or any face card) and wins any combination, except when the dealer has Blackjack. It pays 3 to 2.
Aces: Count as 1 or 11 points.
Figures and 10’s: Count as 10 points.
The rest of the cards: Count as their nominal value.
